According to the backstory, sometime after the events of Syndicate Jacob and Evie travelled to India and learned a bunch of new, non-lethal tricks from the local Assassins, most notably the ability to inspire terror with bombs, combo takedowns and “spikes”, which tether opponents on the ground. The biggest new thing is the fear mechanics which work and can be used to remove combatants in a non lethal which would be good if fully utilized in a full Assassin creed game.
Took couple hours, pretty decent storyline. It’s deep, well-made and generally interesting, and introduces a couple of new mechanics along the way.
If you’re someone who loves the Assassin’s Creed games, then Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate‘s Jack the Ripper expansion is a no-brainer.
Prior to Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate hitting store shelves and delivering the story of twins Jacob and Evie Frye, Ubisoft detailed the game’s Season Pass offerings and hinted at a murderous expansion featuring Jack the Ripper. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced an Ubisoft executive read "Gotham by Gaslight", tore off the cover, and brought it to the next pitch meeting. Unfortunately the first thing Ubisoft thought of was to strip it from the main game and charge people extra for the privilege.

How it fares, though, will depend on personal preference and how much each individual enjoys the time tested and rather repetitive mechanics that Assassin’s Creed has become known for. It was a bit embarrassing to have my dad walk into the room and witness, as well; these moments do not hold out when isolated from the DLC as a whole, and really need the broader context of criticism of violent video games to be properly appreciated. If you pride yourself on being desensitised you may not be so strongly affected, but I personally found playing as Jack extremely uncomfortable. The story, itself, is decent, but it lacks depth and doesn’t expand upon its revealed motives enough. A neat little bundle of new ideas inside an envelope of self-contained storytelling is much more welcome than some attempt to extend the base game’s plot or an isolated slab of more of the same open world busywork. I say that because, while some of the new assassination animations are both brutal and satisfying, there’s not enough to the brutal assassination mechanic to keep it from becoming repetitive.
Things then switch to an age-weathered version of Evie, who acts as the main playable character throughout what is a rather sizeable, several hour-long add-on. The DLC expands upon Unity ' s murder investigation system and tasks players to solve multiple murder cases. I saw so many carriages spontaneously combust that I have no idea what in the world Ubisoft changed between the base game and this DLC to cause that.
